Why Deadbolt Installation Quality Matters More Than the Lock Brand
Most homeowners focus entirely on the lock brand — Schlage, Kwikset, Baldwin — and far less on the installation itself. That is backwards. A Grade 1 Schlage deadbolt installed with a shallow bore, a misaligned strike, or inadequate screw length offers far less real-world security than a modest Grade 2 lock installed correctly with a reinforced strike plate and 3-inch screws driven into the door frame stud. Doors along the older wood-frame homes near Rancho Santa Margarita's town center, for example, sometimes have softer jamb material that requires a security plate upgrade during installation — a detail a rushed or inexperienced technician may skip entirely. Our technicians assess the full door assembly, not just the lock hole, before recommending or proceeding with any installation.
Beyond the door frame, the bore itself matters. A deadbolt that is not perfectly plumb will bind on the bolt throw, creating false reassurance — it feels locked but under force it may not hold. We use precision boring jigs and verify smooth bolt travel and full engagement before we consider a job complete. We also check that the latch and deadbolt work independently so that if you have a door knob lock on the same door, the two mechanisms do not interfere with each other's operation.
